Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Tchéky Karyo has had a truly remarkable journey. Karyo spent most of his growing years in Paris and studied drama at the Cyrano Theatre. He began his career with the National Theatre of Strasbourg and joined the Daniel Sorano Company. His acting talent improved as he played numerous contemporary and classical roles until his first movie in 1982. Karyo was seen as a character actor in French cinema in ‘The Return of Martin Guerra’, followed by ‘La Balance’. However, in 1988 he got his first lead role in ‘The Bear’, a film that won him a lot of attention and praise. Thereafter, the actor was seen in many films of different genres ranging from comedy to tragedy, adventure, drama and erotic content. Some of his most appreciated roles through the decade were in films like Nikita, A Grande Arte, Bad Boys, GoldenEye, Foreign Land, Jeanne d’Arc and The Patriot in 2000. His performance in A Very Long Engagement in 2004 received immense critical acclaim. Besides being an actor he is also a talented songwriter and musician and songwriter. His poetic lyrics are famous just like his two albums ‘Ce Lien Qui Nous Unit’ (2006) and ‘Credo’ (2013). The actor is also the recipient of the Jean Gabin Prize in 1986.
