Roman Polanski is a renowned Polish Film director, producer, writer, and actor. He was born on 18 August 1933 in Paris, France. He started his acting career in 1954 with Andrezej Walda's ‘Pokolenie’ and his debut as a film director was in 1955 with the movie ‘Rower’. His ‘Knife in the Water’ (1962) has been acclaimed as it was the first Polish post-war film that was not based on the war theme. He collaborated with a young scriptwriter Gerard Brach for the movies Repulsion (1965) and Cul-de-sac (1966), which were awarded Silver and Golden Bear Awards in Berlin International Film Festival. In 1974, Polaski became the talk of the town with ‘Chinatown’, which earned 11 Academy Award nominations. He was awarded the Academy Award for Best Director for his movie ‘The Pianist’ in 2002 while the movie itself was also awarded the Palme d'Or, the BAFTA, and Cesar Award. He has also made adaptations of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist (2005) and Robert Harris' The Ghost Writer (2010).
