Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Michelle Phan showed an inclination in art and design since childhood. Due to financial hardships, she could not continue her vocational training. Michelle ventured into blogging in 2005 and later started making videos and tutorials on YouTube in 2007, giving instructions relating to makeup and beauty-enhancing techniques. It was when Buzzfeed featured Phan’s makeup videos that she crossed a million subscribers overnight. Phan became the first American-Vietnamese spokesperson of Lancome in 2010. Phan was the co-founder of MyGlam, a business dealing with beauty cosmetics, and was soon renamed Ipsy. Phan went on to launch a YouTube multi-channel network named FAWN in 2012. L’Oreal launched EM Cosmetics, which Phan bought. She later re-launched the brand and resigned from Ipsy to dedicate her time towards the growth of EM Cosmetics. Phan was one of the 30 who made it to the Forbes list of ’Inc. 30 under 30.’
