Born on June 30, 1985, in Baltimore, Maryland, Michael Fred Phelps is one of the most successful athletes of all time. His career as a competitive swimmer took off quite early when he qualified to participate in the Olympics at 15. Phelps broke the record for the 200-meter butterfly stroke at the 2001 World Aquatics Championships. He also broke fellow swimmer Mark Spitz's record of winning seven first-place finishes in any Olympic Singles by bagging eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. As an international long course swimmer, Phelps has won 82 medals, 65 of which are gold.  He was named Sportsman Of The Year by Sports Illustrated Magazine due to his success in the 2008 Olympics.  Phelps was elected to be the Flag Bearer of the United States at the 2016 Summer Olympics Parade Of Nations. Phelps announced his retirement from the sport on August 12, 2016.
