Bio

Born as Elisabeth Claiborne Ortenberg in Belgium, Liz Claiborne started her career as a clothing designer. Her earliest achievement of having won a Jacques Heim design competition organized by the Harper’s Bazaar magazine, where she had sketched a woman’s coat, gave her the impetus to pursue her career. After that, Liz started working as a model and a design assistant. She gathered experience in dealing with all sorts of clothing, sportswear, casuals, and high fashion. Liz moved on to work with the Dan Keller Company as a dress designer and later joined Jonathan Logan as a leading designer. This is where she realized that women did not have too many options in comfortable, professional clothing. Intending to revolutionize this aspect of women’s lives, she launched Liz Claiborne, Inc. in 1976 with some savings and credit. It became a public company within five years, leaving Liz, a millionaire with 19 divisions and 45 stores.
