She is primarily known for experimenting with many genres such as folk music, show tunes, rock and roll, and pop music and using them to deliver messages of social activism. She released her debut album 'A Maid Of Constant Sorrow' in 1961. Her single 'Both Sides, Now,' written by Joni Mitchell, garnered Collins a lot of international recognition. The song even went on to chart on the top 10 on the Billboard Pop Singles Chart. This led to Collins winning her first Grammy Award for the Best Folk Performance. Her fame reached new heights when she put out her version of Stephen Sondheim's 'Send In The Clown.' She also charted No.1 on the American Billboard Chart at 80 years old in 2019.
