Juan Estebán Aristizábal Vásquez is a Colombian guitarist, singer, songwriter, and activist who was born on August 9, 1972, in Medellín, Colombia. Throughout his career, he had an absorbing stage presence and gained international acknowledgement in the early 21st century for his fervent songs of romantic love and social struggle. For 11 years he was a singer and guitarist for Ekhymosis, a heavy metal band that enjoyed a strong following in his country. However, Juanes was not happy with the artistic limitations of the band and in 1999 he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a solo career. From that moment, there was no stopping him, he became a Grammy Award-winning musician from Colombia. His personal experience of violent conflict in his home country moved him to use music to send a positive message to the youth. Through his songs, his international performances, and his work with his own foundation and other initiatives, he raises awareness of the power and importance of peacebuilding.
