Born on January 19, 1923 in Manhattan, New York, Jean Stapleton started off her career at the age of 18 with a small role in the summer stock theater, which led to her first big debut in the Off-Broadway stage production of ‘American Gothic’. Stapleton received a lot of praise for her role in this play, and was offered spots on several other hit musicals such as ‘Bells Are Ringing’, ‘Damn Yankees’, ‘Juno’, and ‘Funny Girl’. Jean made her debut with commercial feature films when was even offered to recreate her roles in ‘Damn Yankees’ and ‘Bells Are Ringing’ as the lead actress. She began to develop an interest in commercial television and began to star in shows such as ‘Robert Montgomery Presents’, ‘The Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse, and ‘The Patty Duke Show’. Stapleton’s most memorable role, however, was her portrayal of Edith in the critically acclaimed television series ‘All In The Family’ which won her three Emmy and two Golden Globe Awards.
