Jean-Claude Camile Francois Van Varenberg, professionally known as Jean Claude Van Damme, is a renowned actor, filmmaker, and martial artist born in Belgium on October 18, 1960. His martial art training began when he was 12. His father introduced him to martial arts at Centre National De Karate under the guidance of Claude Goetz because he was physically weak. He went on to win the European Professional Karate Association Championship as a teenager. Jean had a long martial arts career from 1976 to 1982. He also acted in the 1984 film Missing in Action. Although this movie did not do well, Jean got more roles and was seen in other movies such as No Retreat, No Surrender (1985), and Bloodsport (1988). He also acted in Cyborg (1989), Universal Soldier (1992), and Double Impact (1991). Jean broke all his previous records with the worldwide hit movie Timecop in 1994.
