Famous for her role as the geisha ‘Hatsumomo’ in the movie ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’, the Chinese-born Singaporean actress Gong Li is a professionally trained actor from the Central Drama Academy in Beijing who was born on 31 December 1965. This gave her immense exposure and the opportunity to connect with industry experts. Director Zhang Yimou spotted her and went on to cast her in ‘Red Sorghum’. The film became one of the greatest hits of 1988, winning several awards and most notably from the Golden Rooster Awards. The Zhang-Gong duo has done several movies together, such as Ju Dou and Raise the Red Lantern. She has also worked with Hong Kong producers and has performed a comic role in A Terracotta Warrior. Some of her famous works include The Story of Qiu Ju, To Live, The Emperor and the Assassin, Zhou Yu's Train, Curse of the Golden Flower, What Women Want, Coming Home, Monkey King: Hero is Back, Mulan, and the American movie Miami Vice.
