Declan Patrick MacManus took on the professional name Elvis Costello when he began his career as an independent solo artist. Born in London, Costello received his gift of music from his father, who was a jazz trumpeter. After finishing his education at St. Francis Xavier's College, he worked several odd jobs before moving to London to start a band called Flip City. He even sang backing vocals with his father for several TV commercials. His big break came with a recording contract with Columbia Records which put him on the international scene. His first hit single was ‘Watching the Detectives’ which propelled him to fame. He then formed a backing band named Attractions before releasing the second album ‘This Year's Model’ which was listed at the 11th spot among best albums from 1967 to 1987 in the Rolling Stone Magazine. His albums were even listed among the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time by the publication. Today, he has won multiple awards including the Grammy Awards in the year 1999 and 2000, and was listed among the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine.
