She studied at Colegio San Jorge de Inglaterra, attended the Rubén Di Pietro Academy of Acting and the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. She won the casting for the film "Maria Full of Grace", (2004).With this film, Sandino won the Silver Bear award for best actress at the Berlin International Film Festival. She was also nominated for the Screen Actor Guild Award, and for the Oscars for best actress, being the first person from that country to receive such a distinction. Sandino works in the film “Love in the Times of Cholera” (2007), she also participated in the French film "Paris, Je t’aime” (2006). She plays Aleida March in both parts of the film “El Che” (2008).
