He studied at the Royal Conservatory of Scotland and Carnoustie High School, then entered the Royal Scottish Academy of music and Drama. Cumming, made his first performance in the film "Passing Glory" (1986). Later, with the film "Prague" (1992), he made his first starring role, with which he won the award for best actor at the Atlantic Film festival. "Romy and Michael" (1997) was his first film in the United States. Cumming co-starred in the film "The Anniversary Party" (2001), of which he was also a Co-Writer, Producer, and Co-Director. His career led him to have prominent participation in the trilogy "Spy Kids" (2001), in "X-Men 2" (2003), in "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999). He also directed two short films: "Butter" (1994) and "Burn Your Phone" (1996).
