Born in New York as Philip Andre Rourke, Mickey Rourke started winning boxing matches when he was only 12. At 19, having suffered a concussion in a match at Golden Gloves, Florida, Rourke started taking up minor theatre roles. He made his debut as an actor in a feature film by Steven Spielberg titled 1941 (1979). After his remarkable performance in Diner (1982) as a gambler, he worked with stars like Tim Daly and Steve Guttenberg. Rourke landed the lead role in Rumble Fish (1983).
