American actress, comedian, dancer and singer, Carol Channing is best known for her work in film and Broadway musicals. Born in Seattle, the vibrant and expressive actress became interested in acting while delivering newspapers backstage at theatres. Her first-ever stage appearance was at the age of 19, in the production, ‘No for an Answer’. She became a popular figure in Chicago theatre, which bagged her a Sarah Siddons Award. Her role in ‘Lend an Ear’ in 1948 also won her a Theatre World Award. In 1950, Time Magazine even published a cover story about her work on Broadway. Channing is best known for the role of Dolly in the musical ‘Hello, Dolly!’, which earned her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. During her career, the actress won four Tony Awards. Her career as a film actress was illustrious with films like ‘The First Traveling Saleslady’, ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ and ‘Skidoo’ to her credit. For her incredible screen persona and acting prowess, she has bagged a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture and has even received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, all for the film Thoroughly Modern Millie. In 1981, she was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Tony Award in 1995.
